St Joseph's Catholic Primary School offers a wide ranging curriculum covering the learning areas: Religion, English, Mathematics, Science, Historical and Social Sciences (HASS), Design and Digital Technologies, Health and Physical Education, Languages (Italian) and The Arts.

Our School is continually developing and reviewing school based programs and units of work to meet the needs of our dynamically changing society.

School Programs

PreLit Program is a skills-based, early literacy program for children. It is designed to provide children with a sound foundation for learning to read. It includes phonological awareness and oral language development through structured book reading. PreLit is used in Prep. 

Cued Articulation is a set of hand cues for teaching the individual sounds in a word. The hand movements are logical - each hand movement represents one sound and the cue gives the clues as to how and where the sound is produced. All P - 2 teachers are trained in cued articulation and it is used in early years classrooms. 

Sound Waves is a program based on the phonemic approach, is recognised as one of the most effective ways of teaching spelling and reading skills.  Sound Waves increase children's knowledge and understanding of the 44 phonemes (sounds) and 26 letters of the alphabet which are the key to successful literacy development. 

RoleM (Representations, Oral Language and Engagement in Mathematics) program provides support for the Early Years. The program caters for diverse learners and has been especially developed for Indigenous students, ESL students and low socio-economic contexts. It has proven success and rigorous testing shows that the program enhances students' mathematics skills and knowledge. 

Primary Connections linking science with literacy is an innovative approach to teaching and learning. A program of the Australia Academy of Science, Primary Connections focuses on developing students' knowledge, understanding and skills in both science and literacy. 

You Can Do It is a personal development program aimed at developing students' social and emotional capabilities that teachers integrate into all areas of curriculum.  It uses the five keys of Confidence, Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along and Resililence. 

Circle Solutions is a framework which aims to promote the social and emotional learning that underpins healthy relationships and fosters a sense of belonging and connectedness.  

Learning Connections equips teachers and school officers with the knowledge and skills to use activities that are designed to promote child development across a broad range of areas. This assists children to develop readiness for learning skills.

SRA Reading Laboratory online programs are used in Prep to Year 6 and are a supplement to the core reading program providing practice in phonics, decodable text, timed reading, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, test preparation and literature. 

Reporting to Parents

An information evening is held early in the year.  Each teacher will outline the procedures in the classroom in an informal atmosphere.  Individual student/parent/teacher team meetings are held towards the end of the first term, with the aim of students leading the conferences and establishing and reviewing a PLP (Personalised Learning Plan) for each child. 

Written reports are sent home at the end of the first and second semesters.

Teachers and parents are encouraged to be in contact with each other at any time during the year when there is an issue or area of concern, which needs to be addressed.
